How To Take Care Of Beaded Hair Extensions
Beaded Extension Care
Hi! I’m Jae, Master Stylist, Color Correction & Extension Specialist & Owner of Alfa Jae Salon. Now that you know who I am lets talk about extension care!
Whether you have already had your beaded extensions installed, you’re contemplating getting them, or if your appointment is already set, it’s important to know how to care for them. Below are how I recommend caring for your beaded extensions.
Products
- Salon quality moisturizing shampoo & conditioner is highly recommended to keep your wefts nourished. Avoid products with lots of alcohols, or paragons & sulfates. Always use heat protectant when using hot tools on your extension. If your scalp/hair is naturally more oily, clarify your hair once every 10 days. Use a deep conditioning mask on the lengths of the extensions (avoiding the top of the weft & the beads) once every 10 days & once a week on blonde hair. Use dry shampoo to extend time between actual shampoos, but avoid using the dry shampoo on the actual weft, only use on your natural hair. Use a serum on your ends to keep them smooth. Extension hair is more porous than most hair so I do not recommend purple shampoo unless you want to risk turning your blonde extensions lavender!
Shampooing
-I recommend shampooing at most 2x per week. Shampoo your natural hair thoroughly, then lift each weft and shampoo underneath and above the weft gently without being too harsh on the beads/hair. Always let the water run down the hair, do not flip your head over when shampooing your extensions because this will cause tangling. If you have a detachable shower head hold it close to your scalp to ensure all the shampoo is out of your hair. Condition your hair avoiding the scalp/beads/top of the weft.
Sleeping
- When sleeping wrapping your hair in a silk or satin bonnet is highly recommended. If you are unable to do that then I recommend a silk or satin pillow case. With long extensions do a loose braid with a scrunchie on the end before bed. Always make sure the wefts are 100% dry near the scalp, and at least 80% dry everywhere else. It is best to sleep with your extensions 100% dry. Leaving the extensions wet for a long period of time can cause weft rot which is essentially your extension hair starting to rot at the top of weft where the hair is sewn together.
How To Dry
- Start by towel drying your hair with a soft/microfiber towel, gently get out as much water as you can. Apply a moisturizing leave in conditioner avoiding the scalp area. Detangle with a wet brush, or the extension brush separate the bottom weft and brush starting from the bottom working your way up while holding the top of the weft, once you get to the top let go & now brush the top of the weft. Repeat this process with each weft. Once your hair is brushed blow dry your hair downward on medium heat either with your extension brush, wet brush, or round brush, careful not to tug or pull to harshly on the hair.
How To Style
- Use a heat protectant when styling your hair. If letting your hair air dry, wet it in the morning, do not sleep on wet hair. Use your hot tools on medium or low heat. Apply your serum AFTER using your hot tools.
Brushing
- Brush your hair thoroughly every morning to prevent tangling, do not skip a day of brushing, especially on long hair. Separate each weft & while holding the top brush the hair starting on the ends working your way to the top. Once you get to the top let go and gently brush over the top of the weft as well. Do this no less than once per day.
Removal
- Make sure to have an extension specialist remove your extensions.
Maintenance
- Your extensions should be maintained every 4-6 weeks. The faster your hair grows the sooner you should come in for maintenance. Depending on the method you may be able to get a move up before you need a full reinstall. I recommend booking your maintenance appointment before you leave the salon.
I hope that you love/will love your new extensions! They can give a real confidence boost, and a total change in appearance.
As usual if you have any questions leave them in the comments!
